CASE STUDY
Major Fire Alarm Installation at Clarks Village, Glastonbury
Project Overview
In 2025, Northpoint Fire & Security successfully completed the design, installation, and commissioning of a large and complex fire alarm system for Clarks Village Designer Outlet in Glastonbury, Somerset.
The project was delivered on behalf of the end client Landsec, via our longstanding partner NG Baileys, further demonstrating Northpoint’s ability to deliver specialist life-safety solutions for high-profile retail environments.
Scope of Works
Northpoint were responsible for the full fire alarm package, including:
-
Design of a bespoke fire alarm system tailored to the layout and operational needs of the outlet village.
-
Installation of fire detection, notification, and control equipment across multiple retail units, common areas, and external zones.
-
Commissioning and programming of the system to ensure full compliance with BS 5839-1.
-
Integration and handover, including documentation, training, and operational guidance for facility management teams.
This project required careful planning to minimise disruption to retail operations, ensure visitor safety, and provide a reliable and fully compliant system for the entire site.

Delivery Approach
-
The project was delivered with a focus on:
-
Coordinated planning with NG Baileys to align installation work with tenant and landlord schedules.
-
Specialist engineering teams experienced in large retail environments and multi-unit complexes.
-
Phased installation strategy, enabling work to progress without interrupting the operational village or customer experience.
-
Full commissioning and testing, including cause & effect programming, ensuring rapid fault detection and system reliability.

Challenges & Solutions
1. Large, Multi-Tenant Environment
Clarks Village comprises multiple independent retail units. Northpoint implemented a zoned approach to isolate tenant systems while maintaining overall site safety.
2. Operational Continuity
Work was carefully scheduled to minimise disruption to shoppers and tenants, ensuring the retail experience remained seamless throughout the installation period.
3. System Complexity
The large-scale system required detailed design and programming to accommodate diverse tenant layouts, sounder zones, and interface requirements with the landlord system.
Outcome
Northpoint delivered a fully compliant, reliable, and high-performance fire alarm system that ensures:
-
Safety for all visitors and staff across the designer outlet village
-
Compliance with British Standards and regulatory requirements
-
Minimal disruption to retail operations during installation and commissioning
-
Long-term reliability and maintainability for Landsec and Clarks Village management
Project Significance
