Fire & Voice Alarm Delivery at Unipart Logistics, Widnes 

Project Overview

In 2023, Northpoint Fire & Security successfully completed the full design, installation and commissioning of a comprehensive fire alarm and voice alarm system for the new Unipart Logistics facility in Widnes. The project was delivered on behalf of Principal Contractor Lindum Group, with Northpoint appointed through their M&E partner Dunnington Electricals.

This development required a robust life safety infrastructure capable of supporting a high-volume logistics hub, with stringent compliance requirements and complex operational demands.

Scope of Works

Northpoint were responsible for the complete fire and voice alarm delivery package, including:

  • Full system design in accordance with BS 5839-1, tailored to the operational layout of the logistics centre.

  • Installation of all fire detection, notification and control equipment across warehouse, office and ancillary areas.

  • Integration of a networked voice alarm system, providing clear, site-wide evacuation messaging.

  • Complex cable routing and containment strategies across high-bay storage zones.

  • Commissioning, cause & effect programming, and full client witness testing.

  • Handover, training and system documentation, ensuring seamless transition into live operation.

Delivery Approach

  • The project was delivered over an 8-month programme, requiring coordinated planning to align with the principal contractor’s build sequence and the M&E contractor’s milestones.

  • Northpoint deployed:

  • 20–25 specialist installation and commissioning engineers to maintain programme continuity.

  • Dedicated design and technical support teams to rapidly address on-site queries and design refinements.

  • Collaborative working processes with Lindum Group and Dunnington Electricals, ensuring consistent communication, safety compliance and quality assurance.

Challenges & Solutions

1. Live Construction Environment

Phased installation and careful sequencing enabled safe working and ensured alignment with other trades.

2. Large-Scale Warehouse Complexity

High-level installation within extensive warehouse zones required specialised access equipment, method planning and experienced engineering teams.

3. Voice Alarm Integration

Northpoint’s commissioning engineers delivered custom programming and acoustic testing to ensure clarity and performance across the expansive warehouse environment.

Outcome

Northpoint delivered a fully compliant, resilient and high-performance fire and voice alarm system, completed on programme and to the full satisfaction of both the client team and Dunnington Electricals.
